Meet Acid-Wash Andy
A 6x optical zoom, a viewfinder AND a screen, and the faded look of a well-loved pair of 1991 jeans.
Andy is a Fujifilm FinePix 2800 Zoom from 2001, Fuji's 2-megapixel bridge camera with a monster 38-228mm-equivalent zoom. In 2001 that was a lot of zoom for a camera this size. Today it's still a lot of zoom for a camera that runs on AA batteries you can buy at a gas station.
At some point a previous owner left old batteries inside, they leaked, and Andy paid the price. The corrosion was cleaned up and sanded, so the area around the battery compartment is discolored. Everything works. He just has that acid-wash finish now, and honestly, it's back in style.
Two megapixels is plenty for Instagram and 4 x 6 prints, and it gives you that soft early-digital vibe everyone keeps trying to fake with phone filters. He shoots little videos with sound, too. Four new AA alkalines are already inside.
About the memory card: Andy comes with a 64MB SmartMedia card, but you won't find it in the camera. It's in a little plastic bag attached to him. Why? Because some jerk keeps stealing the memory cards out of my cameras. Apparently there's a black market for 20-year-old SmartMedia cards and nobody told me. So the card rides separately now, which means you can't fire off test shots onto it in the store. Sorry about that. Blame the card bandit. Pop the card in when you get home and you're good to go. To get your pictures onto a computer, SmartMedia readers are easy to find on Amazon for around $10-15.
