A gift box with a 1999 film camera AND a roll of film inside. Basically a time capsule you're allowed to open.

Are you tired of giving people gift cards that say "I couldn't be bothered"? Give them the Kodak Advantix F600 Zoom instead: a pocket-sized APS film camera from 1999, gift boxed, with a roll of film already included. They open it, they load it, they're a film photographer. You're welcome, and so are they.

APS stands for Advanced Photo System, Kodak's last big swing at reinventing film in the late 90s. The film comes in a sealed cartridge that you just drop in. No threading, no leader, no fumbling with sprockets while your friends wait. And you get three print shapes, switchable frame to frame: C for Classic, H for the wide HDTV-style Group shot, and P for Panoramic, for when you want a photo of a really, really long horizontal thing.

The F600 Zoom itself is a proper little point-and-shoot: 30-60mm zoom (about 38-75mm in 35mm terms), autofocus, a built-in flash with red-eye reduction, fill flash and a night mode, a self-timer, and a date stamp for that authentic "this happened in 1999" look. The film door won't open until the roll is fully rewound, so you literally can't ruin your film by accident. Kodak saw you coming.

About the film: APS film isn't made anymore, so every roll out there is expired. The good news: by expired-film standards, APS is usually not that old, and it often gives perfectly normal results with maybe a little extra vintage character. Plenty of labs still develop it, so you're not stuck with a cartridge full of mystery.

All jokes aside, APS cameras are some of the easiest film cameras ever made, which makes this a great first film camera and a genuinely fun gift. I tested it, put in a fresh CR123A battery, and boxed it up with the film. Give these slowly disappearing cameras some love. They deserve it.
