Meet Scotch-Tape Scotty
A cast-aluminum 1950s rangefinder with accurate shutter speeds and one piece of strategically placed tape.
Scotty is a Kodak Signet 35, made from 1951 to 1958: cast aluminum body, Kodak Ektar lens, coupled rangefinder, and a look that says Cold War spy, even if you're just photographing your sourdough starter. Black versions were made for the US Army and Air Force, so Scotty comes from a family with security clearance.
I tested him: the shutter speeds are accurate and the aperture works normally. Two things to know. First, he won't fire or even pretend to work until film is loaded. That's double-exposure prevention, not a broken shutter. Second, the aperture and shutter rings are coupled: gently pull the aperture ring back to unlock it and set them separately.
His flaw: the glass near the viewfinder is cracked and held in place with a small piece of clear tape. It doesn't affect how he works. Please don't peel it off. Scotty and his tape are in a committed relationship.
DISCLOSED MISFIT FLAW
Crack in the transparent window near the viewfinder, secured with clear tape. It does not affect operation; leave the tape in place. This disclosed flaw is not covered by warranty.
