Meet Velcro Victor

Nikon autofocus, full P/S/A/M control, a lens included, and a flash that works fine. It just needs a hand getting out of bed.

Victor is a Nikon N65 (called the F65 everywhere outside the US), announced in 2000. He's the easiest way into the Nikon F-mount world: autofocus, program, shutter priority, aperture priority, full manual, plus scene modes for when you just want to shoot and not think. And he comes with a lens. The lens alone is worth about fifty or sixty bucks.

Victor's quirk: the latch that holds his pop-up flash down is broken, so I velcroed it shut. The flash itself works perfectly. Want flash? Peel the Velcro and pull the flash up by hand. Don't want flash? Keep it pressed shut and it stays out of your way. Very tactical. Very 90s skate shoe.

One heads-up: in the full auto modes, Victor still tries to pop the flash up on his own when it gets dark. You'll hear a little click and nothing happens, because the Velcro is doing its job. That's normal for him, not a new problem. Just pull it up yourself if you want the light.

One Nikon tip, and this is NOT a flaw: lenses with an aperture ring have to stay locked at their smallest aperture (f/22) and the camera sets the aperture from the body. That's just how Nikon autofocus bodies work. Ask any Nikon nerd; they'll tell you, at length.

And before you panic: if you see an E on the little screen, it doesn't mean Error. On most film cameras from this era, E stands for Empty, as in there's no film inside. Digital cameras trained a whole generation to read E as "something's broken." Victor just means "feed me." Load a roll and the E goes away.

DISCLOSED MISFIT FLAW

The pop-up flash latch is broken, so the flash is held closed with Velcro. The flash works: pull it up by hand to use it, keep it closed to shoot without it. In auto modes the camera may click when it tries to raise the flash itself. This disclosed flaw is not covered by warranty.
