Meet Squinting Stan
A Ricoh-built SLR with a fast 50mm lens, accurate shutter speeds, and one scratched focusing screen.
Stan is a Sears KS-2, which is really a Ricoh XR-7 wearing a Sears name tag. Back in the early 80s, Sears sold everything from lawnmowers to entire houses, and somehow also very good SLRs. Under the hood this is Japanese Ricoh engineering on the Pentax K mount, which opens up a ridiculous world of cheap, great lenses.
He works beautifully: the mirror runs, the shutter speeds are accurate, and the multiple exposure button works, so you can ghost your friends in the most literal way. Aperture-priority auto or metered manual, with an LCD shutter-speed readout in the viewfinder. Fresh light seals.
The catch: Stan's built-in focusing screen is scratched, and it can't be replaced. It doesn't touch your pictures, only what you see through the viewfinder. Look past that and you get a fantastic little camera.
DISCLOSED MISFIT FLAW
The built-in focusing screen is scratched and cannot be replaced. It affects the view through the viewfinder only, not the photos. This disclosed flaw is not covered by warranty.
