Meet Sunny-Sixteen Sid
A Cosina-built manual SLR with a working shutter, brand-new light seals, and a light meter that has left the chat.
Sid is a Vivitar XV-1 from the late 1970s. Vivitar was basically the Honda of camera companies, and this one was built by Cosina (who made cameras for half the industry) on the Pentax K mount, so there's a whole universe of cheap, excellent lenses waiting for him.
Sid's built-in light meter is dead. Everything else works: the shutter opens and closes at every speed I tested, from 1 second to 1/1000, and he has fresh light seals. So you'll set exposure yourself with a phone meter app, a handheld meter, or the Sunny 16 rule: bright sun, f/16, shutter speed of one over your ISO. Learn it once and you'll feel like a wizard forever.
Bonus: with the meter out of the picture, he doesn't need a battery at all. Comes with a Vivitar lens and strap, ready to make you look like you know what you're doing.
